I traveled from Hanoi to Lao Cai by Vietnamese railway. From Lao Cai station to Sapa, I took a cheap local bus, but many people got seasick due to the arduous mountain pass. If you plan to cross this pass, I recommend taking strong motion sickness medication beforehand. From Sapa, I also visited Hekou in China, where you can cross the border on foot.
