Descending the stairs next to the Oyashirazu Tourist Hotel in Itoigawa City, Niigata Prefecture, leads to the coast. It’s a moving thought to imagine people walking along this coastline in the past. Matsuo Basho also walked this path: the notoriously treacherous Oyashirazu – Ichiburi – Etchu Miyazaki – part of his “Narrow Road to the Deep North.”
