It was a very cold winter night.
I usually use an oil heater for heating in the winter, but that day I had forgotten that I had performed maintenance on the timer on the oil heater, so it didn’t turn on beforehand, and the room wasn’t warm.
Normally, I do light work on my laptop, but my main desktop computer is in my room on the second floor, and that day I needed to use it for work. So I quickly pulled out the kerosene fan heater that I hadn’t been using, and started working, thinking, “Fan heaters warm up quickly.”
My head felt foggy
Two hours passed while I was engrossed in my work. I started to feel a bit foggy, so I decided to ventilate the room. I turned off the fan heater, opened the window, and went downstairs to make some coffee. As I sat down in a kitchen chair, I suddenly felt the blood drain from my face, and I fell over, chair and all.
My family saw what happened and immediately called an ambulance. I was put into the ambulance in a dazed state, and although the paramedics asked me some questions, I couldn’t answer them before arriving at the hospital. I received first aid and was admitted to the hospital.
Carbon Monoxide Poisoning
The next day, the doctor explained that I had suffered carbon monoxide poisoning. Because I usually use an oil heater, I rarely ventilated the room, so I was completely careless.
Especially in airtight houses, lack of ventilation can be life-threatening. My room had a ventilation system called “Lossnay” installed, but I hardly ever used it, so I had completely forgotten it existed (laughs).
Since that incident, even with an oil heater, I always make sure to operate the “Lossnay” and ventilate regularly.
