Getting PCR Test to Return to Japan from Vietnam (Negative Certificate Obtained for 1,150,000 VND in Go Vap, Ho Chi Minh City)

Information as of May 2022

I went to get a PCR test to return to Japan from Vietnam. They issue a certificate in the Japanese designated format. (Please excuse the shaky video.)

While there are many places to get tested in central Ho Chi Minh City, this is convenient for those staying in areas outside the city center, such as Go Vap District.

The fee on May 30th was 1,150,000 VND (approximately 6,302 yen at the exchange rate on that day).

I printed out the Ministry of Health, Labour and Welfare’s designated format in Japan and brought it with me, but the hospital has the same format available, so you don’t need to bring your own. (I have received three doses of the vaccine, so my My SOS card also turned green.)

The certificate takes 24-26 hours to issue, so I recommend scheduling your appointment well in advance, taking the time into consideration. (Photography was prohibited in the examination area, so I was unable to take photos.)

Access the link below (1*) and select Japanese. You will be taken to a Japanese application form. Fill it out and submit it. You will receive an email confirming your registration, date and time, and a URL for a health observation form to be completed 15 minutes before your appointment.

On the day of your appointment, complete and submit the health observation form 15 minutes before your appointment (the health observation form is in Vietnamese, but you can translate it using Google Translate before filling it out and submitting it. Please fill it out in English).

Upon arrival, please go to the location shown in the video (the green sign with “SARS-COV-2 TESTING AREA” written in yellow Vietnamese and white English) and show your registration confirmation email to be registered.

If you are tested between 9:00 AM and 10:30 AM, your certificate will be issued around 9:30 AM the following day. If you are tested between 1:30 PM and 3:00 PM, your certificate will be issued around 3:00 PM the following day.

Please note that the reception desk will be closed for lunch from 11:30 AM to 1:30 PM, and no one will be there when you go to pick up your certificate.

  1. By the way, the sign that says “Please do not go” means “Do not enter the building.” There is an ATM near the entrance that accepts international credit cards, so you can withdraw money there. Apologies for the lack of explanation.
  2. Just to be sure, here’s some additional information. The following statement was found on the JAL website, so I’m quoting and reposting it here as a warning. The following is from the JAL website: “For short-term stays abroad, etc., you cannot use a test certificate obtained upon departure from Japan again upon re-entering Japan.”
